Home > Auckland Sports > Outdoor Water Sports

All kinds of outdoor water sports are popular in Auckland and are very much a way of life for most Aucklanders.

Looking for water activities to take part in ?

Auckland has many available to you, such as fishing, diving, wind surfing, kayaking, sailing, snorkelling and water-skiing or exploring the wonderful bays of the many islands in the stunning Hauraki gulf.

There are more than 1000 kms of stunning coastline around the Auckland area for you to explore.

You'll discover the powerful wind and waves of the west coast, popular with surfers and the calmer waters of the east, great for kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing and fishing.

There's plenty of sailing clubs and organisations in and around Auckland which cater for all kinds of crafts such as dinghies, yachts, power boats, jet skis, canoes, kayaks, rowing boats and fishing boats.

Take a trip up to Lake Pupuke, near Takapuna on the North Shore. This picturesque freshwater lake is popular for sailing, rowing and canoeing. Well worth the visit, there's also a café on the waterside for refreshments.

Maybe getting under the water would be more your thing. Why not consider taking up scuba diving, a great sport either for exploring the many attractions along the coast or to catch fish, lobsters, mussels and scallops.

Want to know what it's like to sail a real America's Cup racing boat? No experience is needed, just bring along your enthusiasm and join in.

The trips last around 2 hours and sail daily from the Viaduct. There's no comforts and you are exposed to the elements of the South Pacific so you're sure to have an invigorating experience.

Auckland, New Zealand isn't known as the 'City of Sails' for nothing !
