The Auckland New Zealand transportation system has had a lot of critisism for being inadequate and inefficient but there are signs of improvement.
Most international flights arriving in New Zealand go through
Auckland International Airport
where a number of New Zealand airlines connect with the rest of the country. It's 21km from Auckland airport into Auckland city centre so you'll have to hire a car, take a taxi or jump on the
Auckland Airbus
to get there. Once in the city, look for the Link busses to get you around the Auckland central area. Operated by Stagecoach buses, the Link busses travel clockwise and anticlockwise around the inner city area every 10 minutes. If you want to get around to all the tourist attractions you can buy a day pass for the Auckland Explorer bus. This is a jump on jump off bus that departs from the Ferry Building every 30 minutes in the Summer and every hour in the winter. Visiting 14 top Auckland attractions, the tour comes with full commentary. For access to buses, trains and ferries, the recently completed Britomart Transport Centre is the place to go.
Here you'll find all the information and timetables you'll need for getting around the Auckland, New Zealand transportation network. The Tranz Metro train has three services from the Britomart Centre, these run radially to Waitakere and two routes to Pukekohe. It's proving useful for commuters in these areas but not so good for tourists.

Taxis are easy to find, just head to a taxi rank. There's loads of them around but just like in most cities around the world they can be pretty pricey.
Auckland is such a spread out city that a
car
is really a necessity for getting around here. There's a a multitude of car dealers, auctions and car fairs around the city so you'll easily find the car you're after. If you just need to rent a car there are many Auckland car rental companies to choose from, check out Discovery Car Hire to compare the costs of the various hire companies in New Zealand.

If you're planning on going further afield and discovering what the surrounding countryside has to offer, then there's no better way to explore the beautiful sights than by
campervan
or motorhome.
There are many companies offering campervan hire in New Zealand, so shop around for the best deals.
To get out to the Gulf islands, the Eastern suburbs or over to the north Shore you'll find the ferry services excellent.
Operating from the Ferry building at the bottom of Queen Street, the trip to Devonport takes about 10 minutes, the crossing to Waiheke around 35 minutes and Great Barrier Island takes approximately 2 hours.
The Fullers Ferry to Devonport
Still one of the most pleasant ways to get around the city centre is on foot or by bike, with most things within easy walking distance.
Be prepared for Queens street as this is quite a steep hill. For relaxation take a stroll or bike ride along Tamaki Drive on the waterfront .
Watch out for the New Zealand weather though, it can change quickly, so carry an umberella or rain mac with you.
