> Auckland Boats
Auckland Boats are pretty much a way of life here due to the
fact that everyone lives only a short distance from the sea.
Auckland Harbour is alive with everything from sailboards racing around, ferries crossing between the islands and ocean going container ships and passenger liners.
There are more boats per capita in Auckland than anywhere else in the world, so to take maximum advantage of Auckland's beautiful maritime location and to get around the many beautiful islands in the gulf, you really should think about owning a boat of your own.
Whether you're looking for a small dingy, a power boat or a super yacht, you're sure to find something suitable within your budget right here in Auckland. There are many boat and yacht builders, designers and merchants around the area and you'll find plenty of privately advertised boats for sale.
Try looking in the local papers or on
for what you're looking for. Don't worry either if you have no experience, there are plenty of courses around the area to teach you everything you need to know.
Check out some of the Marinas for more information and to get to know the local boat community.
Westhaven is New Zealand's best equipped marina with well over a thousand boats of every kind moored here. Located at the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf, underneath the Auckland Harbour bridge, it's the biggest Marina in the southern hemisphere.
Sailing in the Bay of Islands
On the East side of Auckland and quite close to where I live is the Half Moon Bay Marina. Located on the Tamaki River, Half Moon Bay marina is a good size and has all the facilities you'll need. There's a good chandlery store as well as a fishing and diving shop.
If you aren't lucky enough to own your own boat or don't feel energetic enough to sail your own, don't despair, you can still take part in the action. There are many boat companies around where you can charter a boat or if you feel a bit out of your depth there are some excellent ferry companies offering regular services from various locations around Auckland out to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf.
Just jump on board, sail out to one of the islands and spend a day walking along the beautiful beaches, relax in an island vineyard restaurant and enjoy the world renowned wines or experience the first class cuisine of one of the island's fine restaurants, many with unbelievable views.
Then, if you have any energy left, cruise back to the 'City of Sails' and experience for yourself the exciting Auckland nightlife.
