Spending a day out at one of the many beautiful
Auckland beaches
is a favourite activity for Aucklanders.
The mild Auckland weather means a trip to the beach is something that can be enjoyed at almost any time of the year.
Imagine a Summer Barbeque with family and friends on the beach on Christmas day !
There are 28 quality beaches around the Auckland area and more than 100 beaches within an hours drive from central Auckland.
Take a look at the
Auckland map
to get your bearings and zoom in on the satellite view to get a better view.
With so much choice you won't have to travel too far to find somewhere to relax, play and explore. Best of all, it won't cost you a thing !
Relax on the safe beaches and waters of the East Coast. Here you can enjoy a multitude of activities such as boating, sailing, fishing, swimming, windsurfing, snorkelling, water-skiing or building sand castles with the kids.

Bethells Beach
Most Auckland beaches have picnic and BYO barbecue sites, toilets and parking and during the summer are patrolled by lifeguards.
Experience the excitement of Takapuna, Long Bay, or Maraetai on a summer's afternoon, take a ferry over to Devonport and relax on the family friendly Cheltenham beach or stay close to Auckland city centre on Mission Bay, one of the East Coast beaches along Tamaki Drive.
You could have a go at scuba diving. A very popular activity either for pleasure or to catch fish, lobsters and mussels.
Equipment is not too expensive and is available at local dive shops for rent. There are also good diving schools around the area where they will teach you all you need to know for safe diving.

West Coast Surf
If you're looking for something to get your adrenaline pumping then check out the awesome surf of the magnificent West Coast.
The waves crashing in from the Tasman sea offers one of the best surfing locations available anywhere.
Dramatic volcanic cliffs rise up from stunning iron sand beaches to the green Waitakere Ranges above.
Only an hour away from the heart of Auckland City, accessed via
the narrow roads winding through the hills, you'll discover two natural Auckland attractions popular with surfers, the
spectacular beaches of Piha and Muriwai.
Both beaches have shops and motorcaravan sites and at Muriwai
you'll also find a built-in barbecue site and an environmental
history display.
If you need surfing equipment and training or just want to meet with like minded people, you'll find enthusiastic specialists in the Auckland area to offer you advice, so if this is your thing, grab your board and join in !
For spectacular surf DVDs and photographs from New Zealand check out
The Surf Shop
for some great surfing products. You can also view live, high quality video of Piha surf from their site. Well worth a look.
Of course, you could just
find your favourite beach,
grab your towel, lie back and unwind !
Whatever activity you choose to take part in on the beach, make sure you pay attention to the Auckland
Beach Rules.
Waitakere City's west coast beaches are admired the world over for their rugged beauty - but they can also be dangerous and deadly.
You must be aware of the dangers and take steps to ensure your own safety.
Be safe and you will enjoy your visit.
