Are you looking for a great Beach around Auckland ?
Here's a selection of some of the more popular beaches with short descriptions of each.
Bethells Beach
Located on the west coast, Bethells Beach is a great beach for
walking the dog, fishing, or exploring the beachside caves.
The Maori named this beach 'Te Henga' because of the way the sand dunes look like an upturned canoe.
Around 50 mins drive from central Auckland, Bethells Beach is small but quite beautiful and where the river runs down to the sea there is a shallow lagoon.
Follow a path to Lake Wainamu where there is sheltered swimming.
O'Neill's Bay, a great surfing beach can be reached by a track crossing the northern headland.
There are no public facilities here so make sure you have fuel in the car and take your own food.
Browns Bay
A great Auckland beach for families. Swimming is safe and you can have a barbeque on the beach.
Situated near to the shopping centre, there's a large playground for the children and a skateboard ramp on the reserve. It's permitted to launch boats off the beach here and water skiing is popular. All the usual ammenities are nearby including a changing and toilet facility and beachfront cafes.
Campbells BayA small family beach safe for swimming.There's a playground provided for the children and toilets are available. The shopping centre is close by and there's plenty of space to park the car. Small boats can be launched from the beach.
Castor BayNear to Campbells Bay, Castor Bay is a quiet beach ideal for children, providing safe, sheltered swimming for the family with plenty of shade from the sun.
There's a boat ramp to launch the boat from and a jungle gym to keep the kids entertained.
A small toilet block is available.
CheltenhamMy favourite Auckland beach.Located in Devonport just across the harbour from Auckland city, it is easily reached by ferry from the CBD. Cheltenham Beach is a safe tidal beach with golden sands and is very popular with families. There are grassed areas for picnics, a toilet block and an excellent restaurant.

A good swimming beach close to the shopping centre, plenty of
parking is available.
A children's playground can be found on the nearby reserve and for anglers, fishing off the wharf is permitted.
Little Shoal BayA good tidal beach for safe swimming and boating.There's a launching ramp for boats, a barbeque area and a nearby reserve.
Karekare
Around 60 minutes drive from central Auckland Karekare is a good surf beach and a great beach for jogging or playing along the water's edge.
You should only swim here between the flags when they are displayed. An easy walk up the road from the beach leads to the Karekare Falls which tumble six metres into a shady pool.
Long Bay
The Maori name for Long Bay is 'Oneroa', meaning long expanse of sand.
Located about 25 minutes drive north of Auckland city, the one kilometre Long Bay beach is one of the most popular in the area, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It offers safe family swimming, toilets, changing rooms, shady picnic and barbecue areas and a restaurant. A small playground and a miniature railway will keep the children happy. Long Bay Regional Park is a favourite for Aucklanders.
Take the coastal track from Long Bay to Granny's Bay and Pohutukawa Bay for great coastal views.
Mairangi BayClose to the Mairangi Bay beach shopping centre, there is ample parking along the beachfrontand more available behind the shops.
There's a playground for the kids to enjoy, a small grass reserve area and a toilet facility.
You can launch small dinghies and jet skis from the beach but take care for swimmers.
MedlandsA very popular Auckland beach on the east coast.A great beach for swimming, with estuaries, sand dunes, rocks and white sand. If you're into surf fishing then Medlands Beach is the choice for you.
Milford
Another popular family beach with a playground for the children
and a toilet block.
There's plenty of space for beach volleyball and a large grassed area. It has a marina, the Milford Cruising Club, a boat ramp and parking off Milford Road.
Mission BayLocated just 10 minutes from the CBD.This is the favorite Auckland beach for Aucklanders which means it's gets quite crowded on Summer days. It's a sandy beach, great for swimming with plenty of shops and cafes and cinemas along the promenade. Rollerblading and cycling are both popular pastimes here.
Muriwai
Around 50 minutes drive from central Auckland, Muriwai is a
regional park with cliff top trails and a gannet colony.
One of the few places in the world where gannets nest on the mainland.
There are walks through Muriwai Regional Park, a golf course and horse ridng nearby.
This is a great beach to excercise your legs and take in that fresh sea air.
Murrays BayA safe swimming beach for the family.Murrays Bay has a wharf and toilet facilities. A trail along the clifftop offers spectacular views of the coastline and there is an adjacent grass reserve.
Narrow NeckA popular, safe swimming beach close to Devonport.Narrow Neck Beach is a large Auckland beach with a children's playground and a shop on the reserve. There are good picnic and barbeque facilities and a sailing club so you can watch the sailing from the beach.
OrewaJust 30 mins north of Auckland city, Orewa Beach has a long shoreline and plenty of activities for a good day out.There are plenty of cafes and eateries, an amusement park and playground for the kids as well as a swimming pool and walkways.
Piha
Around 60 minutes drive from central Auckland Piha is a very
popular spot for more experienced surfers and Piha lagoon offers a relaxing retreat for Aucklanders.
Lion Rock, a small island in the middle of the beach offers panoramic views to those who manage to climb the 70 metre track to the top. There is a quiet seaside town here and there are stunning walks in the surrounding hills.
Rothesay BayA small, safe swimming beach popular with families.There is a large grass area and a playground for the children and a small toilet block close by.
Takapuna
A very popular Auckland beach on the North Shore area, 10 minutes from the Harbour Bridge.
There's a picnic area, good parking, toilets, changing block and a large boat ramp. On a clear day you'll enjoy great views of Rangitoto and other Hauraki Gulf islands. Takapuna Beach is a long beach so it's good for jogging or walking. A little south of Takapuna Beach is St. Leonard's, a local nude beach.
WaiakePopular with locals who moor their boats in the bay.Waiake Beach in Torbay has a boat ramp and a small playground, toilets and changing rooms.
